Alogliptin

Alogliptin is a drug that is used with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. Controlling high blood sugar is critical because it helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen the risk of a heart attack or stroke. The drug works by increasing levels of natural substances called incretins. Incretins help to control blood sugar by increasing insulin release, especially after having a meal. They also decrease the amount of sugar our liver makes.

A person should read the Medication Guide provided by their pharmacist before they start using alogliptin and each time they get a refill. If they have any questions, ask the doctor or pharmacist. Take this medication by mouth as directed by the doctor, usually once daily with or without food.

The dosage is based on our medical condition and response to treatment. We need to take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help us remember, take it at the same time each day. Carefully follow our diabetes management plan, including medications, diet, and exercise. Check our blood sugar regularly as directed by our doctor. Keep track of the results and share them with our doctor. Tell the doctor if our blood sugar measurements are often too high or too low. The doctor may need to adjust our diabetes medication, exercise program, or diet. Alogliptin comes as a tablet to swallow by mouth and is usually taken with or without food once a day. We need to take alogliptin at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on our prescription label carefully and ask our doctor or pharmacist to explain any part we do not understand. Moreover, we need to take alogliptin exactly as directed and do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by our doctor.
